The extreme heat
that reached the Philadelphia region over the weekend was very
dangerous and affected the daily activities of citizens who took
precautionary measures to avoid fatal consequences.
The National
Meteorological Service has also issued an excessive heat warning for
all neighborhoods in Philadelphia, New York, Delaware, and New
Jersey.
Health authorities
recommended that people stay in cool places and be aware of pets and
adults.
The
high-temperature forecast for Friday was 97 degrees, the forecast for
Saturday 101 and the forecast for Sunday 100, but it felt 115
degrees.
The last time 100
degrees were seen in Philadelphia was in 2012. There were two days
when temperatures reached 100 degrees that year and also in 2011.
The weekend will be
the most dangerous moment due to the cumulative heat effect. It is
suggested to stay in places with air conditioning or a fan with an open
windows, be aware of the elderly, take special care with pets and use
sunscreen.
The highest
temperatures will occur from noon to 6:00 in the afternoon. Isolated
storms and tropical rains could appear and power outages could occur.
The city of Philadelphia issued the first summer heat health emergency, joining
other communities in the area, including Camden, Mercer, Montgomery
and Wilmington counties, in launching initiatives to help people most
susceptible to heat.
"We urge the
public to visit older friends, family, and neighbors to ensure that
air conditioners or fans are working and that homes are properly
ventilated," said Dr. Thomas Farley, Health Commissioner of
Philadelphia.
"In a heatwave,
most of the victims are elderly and those with pre-existing medical
conditions," Farley said.
The National
Meteorological Service said that heat is responsible for more deaths
each year than any other weather event.
The average
temperature for this time of year is 87 degrees, well above the
average until the beginning of next week.
