Sky Games Over the East China Sea: Japan Scrambles Jets as China Pushes Boundaries: Japan and China are now pointing fingers—accusing each other of airspace violations near the fiercely disputed Senkaku Islands (known in China as the Diaoyu). On Saturday, Japan says it was forced to scramble fighter jets after a Chinese coast guard helicopter lifted off from one of four vessels that had intruded into Japan’s territorial waters. The aircraft, according to Tokyo, flew inside Japanese airspace for 15 tense minutes. That wasn’t just a diplomatic slip-up—it was a deliberate provocation, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, which called it an “intrusion into Japan’s territorial airspace” and lodged a “very severe protest” with Beijing.
