Every child born on this earth has right to education. It is the responsibility of the society at large to ensure this is realized irrespective of the circumstances and the conditions across nations. While the elders are responsible for most human caused crisis, we must see to that these situations do not penalize children and deprive them of their basic education. There are a lot of reasons why continuing education is a top priority even amidst wars and severe political disturbances.
Syria is one of the countries that need to end the worst wars of our times and work for recovery. The devastating conditions of wars should be cured and stability needs to be achieved. While working for this end, education to children will have a decisive role to play. When we give quality education to people, we are also giving them a chance to escape out of their crippling circumstances. Economists strongly believe that education is one of the drivers of economic growth. Every additional year of schooling has the potential to lift up the income of an individual by 10%. Lack of education and low quality education will only pave way for unemployment and increase in violence and crimes. The low income forces people to seek the support of armed groups who recruit them and allure them in the name of more income and prestige ultimately pulling them to take part in destructive activities. Secondary education enhances income avenues and life choices for youth.
Before the onset of war, Syria had one of the top literacy rates in the world with over 95% in the 15 to 24 years group having got enrolled in schools. In about four years of conflict situation, the country now reports the lowest literacy rates in the world. More than half of the children living in refugee camps do not have access to education at all. Over and above, basic education in Syria has fallen from 100% to less than 50% now. In fact in regions that have seen widespread conflict over a long period, the literacy rates are not more than 6%. A large number of education programs launched to remedy the situation are underfunded and are not up to the mark for want of more funds.
The reasons for this downward trend in education stem from the contemporary situation in Syria. Every school in Syria is vulnerable to attacks. Syria is experiencing one of the most dangerous times when the avenues of educations are closed for most children. More than a quarter of schools are dilapidated, ruined, occupied by militants or used to accommodate refugees. The brave teachers who are supporting and teaching the children amidst the terrible conditions really have to be appreciated.
Under the involvement of communities, delivering education safely is indeed possible. Understanding the role of education in uplifting people’s conditions, morale and income, more stress should be given on educational help to Syrian children. In fact, the large numbers of voluntary groups working to give education in Syria are doing elaborate planning and also promote home-based learning activities wherever it is not possible to run schools. More help is called for to remedy the situation and ensure that more children are covered by the swelling support.
