Fidel Castro’s death could offer President-elect Donald Trump a chance to retract his promise to South Florida voters to back the US-Cuba rapprochement.
Although on Saturday he condemned Castro, calling him a “brutal dictator,” Trump also spoke of a new beginning for the Cuban people toward “prosperity and freedom.”
“Although Cuba remains a totalitarian island my hope is that today it will begin to move away from the horrors it has had to endure”, and to “a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they deserve so much” Donald Trump sated.
Although his brother Raul is still in command of the Cuban island, “the psychological impact of Fidel’s death can not be ignored” said experts, who have spent years studying the dynamics of Cuba-US relations.
His death may detract from the strongest critics of US approach to Cuba while eliminating what some analysts believe was the main opposition to the reforms implemented by Raul Castro.
Experts on Cuban issues such as William LeoGrande of American University say that the death of Fidel Castro may offer President Elect Donald Trump an opportunity to regain an earlier stance when he supported relations with the island.
“It’s easier to tweak a campaign promise when events change in this way,” said LeoGrande.
The Hidden History of Negotiations between Washington and Havana might be in the forefront in the next few months, “There is not a moment more transcendental for the relations between States and Cuba then the death of Fidel Castro”. Insiders pointed out.
Trump incorporated one of the toughest critics of Obama’s policies toward Cuba, Mauricio Claver-Carone, executive director of the US-Cuba Democracy Political Action Committee, to his transition team, but also appointed as Deputy National Security Adviser to Kathleen Troia “KT” McFarland, who has publicly endorsed relations with Cuba.
“We must take steps to ensure that Cuba does not become a puppet of China or Russia, from where it could threaten the security of the United States with a military presence” McFarland wrote in a column published in Fox News in 2014.
Forecasting Trump’s next move is not easy
Like other policies, Trump’s views on Cuba changed over the months as the campaign warmed up. During the Republican primaries, he repeatedly said he supported the idea of resuming diplomatic relations with Cuba, but criticized Obama for not getting a better deal for the United States.
