How To Be A Good Full Time Parent

Being a full time parent is, perhaps, one of the most exciting challenges you will face in your life.

Many books and websites have been written on the subject. Therefore, this article will only mention the basics so you can feel more secure by staying home with the kids. The rewards are worth it…

Take care of yourself first.

As this might seems a little contradictory, it will be better for you and your children in the long run. Do you remember the phrase “if mom is not happy, nobody is happy”, this phrase is also for parents. You can achieve this by resting well (rest as much as you can if your young children allow it), eating well and treating you well.

  • Set a routine for the kids and for you as soon as possible. Consider subscribing to some Internet sites for help.
  • Wake up at least 15 to 30 minutes before your children wake up so you can have some time for yourself and prepare. Take a bath, have a cup of coffee and check your routine for the day.
  • Take time to cuddle with your children if they are still small; 5 to 15 minutes can make the difference at the start of the day.
  • Encourage your children when possible, at least once a day. If you say “thank you” or “good work,” you can achieve wonders in your relationship with your children.
  • Try to avoid saying “no”. Think of ways to change those “no” into “yes.” For example, instead of saying “not today”, try saying “maybe tomorrow or next week”.
  • Encourage your children to help with household chores. Even if they can not do “well,” remember they are trying to help, so appreciate the effort.
  • Appreciate the differences of each child. You may have a “preferred” child, but do not let them know. Treat everyone equally in accordance with their different ages and personalities.
  • Start getting ready to go to sleep at least an hour earlier. This will give you enough time at the end of the day to give them a bath, to pamper them and to smile.
  • Get ready for the next day by checking the calendar, making a list of what the kids need to do for that day and then leaving the clothes ready (your kids can prepare their clothes if they are big enough for it).

Congratulate yourself; you have just finished one day satisfactorily. Now you can rest, you will need to feel good for tomorrow.

Tips

  1. Even if you have had a difficult day with your children, let them know the following when you take them to sleep: “Today we had a bad day, right? Tomorrow we will have a better day, okay?
  2. Remember to rest and eat well, this will give you energy to deal with your children.
  3. If you were angry with your children, apologize; both will appreciate that and learn from it.
  4. Do not be afraid to ask for advice when you need it, but choose each advice carefully.
  5. Keep a list of emergency numbers on hand, preferably two lists, one for you and one near the phone. It is really necessary and very useful to have the pediatrician’s number on hand.
  6. If you are the parent of a teenager, let them do what they want but make sure it is safe.
  7. If you have a teenage boy, do not say offensive nicknames, they really feel very bad when you do this.

Warnings

  1. Never hit your children.
  2. Do not worry too much about small things. For example, if your child scores poorly on a third-grade test, it does not mean that he or she will leave school or become a bum; nor does it mean that they will not be accepted at the University of your Choice. Universities do not even see primary ballots. Bad grading means your child needs to study better for the next test.
  3. If your child is rebellious as a teenager, if you get angry with them and offend him or her, ask for forgiveness.
  4. Do not compare yourself negatively with another parent or the neighbor who lives across the street. This is a way to affect your own self-esteem and as a parent you need to have a good self-esteem.
