How states manipulate Interpol alerts to persecute exiled dissidents and refugees throughout global borders


Interpol is the globe’s most significant policing organisation connecting One hundred ninety member countries in the fight in opposition to worldwide criminal offense.

But as representatives with the worldwide law enforcement organization met at their General Assembly towards the end of 2016, they faced questions over a crucial crime fighting tool.

Around 2015, Interpol issued more than 11,000 “Red Notices” on the part of member countries. These types of notifications inform nations around the world that an individual is wanted for really serious offences. It is then up to authorities in different countries to determine what action to take.

But human legal rights groups have suggested that some nations have used Interpol wanted notices to focus on political dissidents and opponents across borders, often with devastating consequences.
