In many cities the municipal Dog kennels are totally saturated with animals and in this situation they opt for the sacrifice of those who do not find a home or are not claimed within a certain period of time.
This measure is very controversial and is often faced with the rejection of many associations and protectors in the area, who advocate other types of measures instead of resorting to the slaughter of animals.
Here we are going to expose some of the arguments of both sides, so that each one can get an idea of the problem and draw their own conclusions.
Conditions of Dog kennels
The main argument of the kennels is that they are overflowing.
Many neighbours call to ask to be taken to cats or kittens that proliferate in some neighbourhoods and prevent neighbour from sleeping.
They also receive many calls from abandoned dogs that should be taken care of.
Pet Friendly Places
The law prohibits having animals crowded and therefore their capacity is limited, so they say they are forced to sacrifice those who can not find a home.
Many owners do not fulfil l their obligation to provide a chip to their pets, so it is impossible to return them since you can not know whose animal is found. Especially in the case of cats.
Arguments of the protectors
The kennels depend on public bodies, be they municipalities, county councils or autonomous governments.
In many cases, their management is in private hands and economic interests are placed before those of the animals.
The management of the kennel should be public and accompanied by sterilization campaigns for stray animals; of awareness campaigns for pet owners to sterilize them; of the control of the illegal trade of animals (individuals that sell litters) and other similar campaigns.
Although this may seem expensive, does not really require a large investment of money and in many cases there are protectors willing to collaborate with their volunteers to carry out many of these campaigns, either giving informative talks, or with control of the colonies.
Although the protectors are always against the sacrifice, in many cases they consider that it is even more bloody, since the term given to the animals is so extremely short that it is practically impossible for them to have opportunities to be adopted or even located by their owners.
