The Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) extended the date to submit individual assistance requests, Governor Ricardo Rossello Nevares confirmed.
The victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria will have an additional period of 90 days – until June 18, 2018 – to request assistance from the various individual assistance programs offered by FEMA, including housing assistance, SBA loan and assistance of unemployment by disaster.
According to a press release, the new extension of FEMA’s individual assistance program was granted yesterday. The date had already been extended until March 20.
“We still have Puerto Rican sisters and brothers who depend on this aid and this extension will play an important role in the recovery of the island,” the president said in written statements.
Likewise, it was reported that the federal agency also granted an extension of a period of 60 days in the aid for the removal of plant material.
Both extensions are added to the new deadline – with limitations – of the temporary housing program in Florida for the families that already had that benefit.
This program – known as Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) – seeks to provide temporary shelter to displaced families from their main home following a disaster and who, given the seriousness of the damage, can not return to that structure.
In this case, FEMA extended the period until May 14th.
In principle, the TSA was going to be valid until the 20th of this month. It will now be extended for 55 days, but adds the requirement for a review of each case on or before April 20.
Similarly, the benefit is limited to families who already had it and discards displaced persons from Puerto Rico who are living in Florida with a friend or relative, said the federal agency, explaining that the extension was granted due to the number of people whose residences are located in areas where there is still a lack of basic services, such as water and electricity.
Likewise, it excludes persons whose residences on the Island were inspected and it was determined that they did not suffer substantial damages and in whose zones there is electricity and potable water service.
Nor will it be extended to those who have tried to contact FEMA more than three times to make an appointment and inspect their main home.
The TSA has benefited about 1,300 families so far.
