Eric Greitens was a decorated Navy SEAL who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, the founder of the Missouri Veterans Association and a Rhodes Scholarship.
Charismatic, he was elected governor of Missouri and seen by other Republicans as a potential star within the party, someone with brains and political instincts all the way up to the White House.
Mr Greitens resigned abruptly, more than four months into a scandal involving a sexual relationship with his hairdresser, he had taken an explicit photo of her without his permission.
He has also been accused by prosecutors of improper use of charity's donor list for political purposes.
Mr Greitens, who was elected to power in 2016, insisted he did not commit crimes or "no cause of this treatment. He described the "legal harassment of colleagues, friends and supporters of the campaign" and said "it is clear hat there is no end in sight".
"Mr. Greitens said." He added, "I can not allow these forces to continue to cause pain and hardship to the people I love."
Greitens apologized to the people of Missouri and said he had worked it out with his wife. But he insisted that he did not commit any crime.
An explosive report from the legislative committee of the House, released in April, told a different story.
They sealed the bill that the woman gave the legislators, she went to Mr. Greitens' house on his invitation one morning, where he suggested they work together; Then he blindfolded her and started kissing her.
He then tore off the shirt, pulled down the pants and took a picture of her with his mobile phone, she said. Shortly after, he forced her to perform oral sex, said the report.
