MARCELO WARNS EUROPEAN LEADERSHIPS OF NEW COLD WAR

President of the Republic expressed concern today, warning that the European Union is now preparing for years of “weak leadership” and that there is “an almost apparent return to the Cold War “.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaking at the opening of the 3rd Lisbon Conference, dedicated to the theme of “Development in times of uncertainty”, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, resumed his message of appeal for the modernization of political systems which, in their opinion, are in “delay”.

He also criticized the European Commission’s proposal for a Community budget, reiterating that it was “far from being a good starting point” and argued that “a European Union that fails in internal cohesion, is a Union which fails in the essential, that is in the union “.

According to the President of the Republic, it is necessary to have “a collective effort, as has been defended and practiced by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to avoid a new and more random cold war or similar reality and to stop escalations of protectionism, egocentrism , of closures of all kinds “.

“And now, as far as we are concerned, a more united European Union, with sustained growth and jobs and, above all, institutionally more prepared for years to come, in which weak national leaderships will make European leaderships impossible,” he added.
