We have spoken on this blog on more than one occasion that our pets can also have cancer, just as it happens with humans. That is why it is very important that every so often we check for lumps and in case of any change in the way they eat or act, we go to the vet .
But if after going to the consultation we find the dreaded diagnosis of cancer, we must be clear that it does not have to mean the end. There are many types of cancers and tumors and many of them can be cured .
A cancer expert
The veterinarian we go to normally does not have to be an expert in cancer, so we can go to a more specialised clinic. In most cases where there is a tumor they will tell us that we must remove it in order to analyze it and know what we are facing.
After the removal of the tumor, chemotherapy may be recommended because if it has been removed in time it will help prevent the dreaded metastasis.
But there are cases like lung cancer in which they will tell us that it is not worthwhile to operate on the animal because there is nothing that can be done other than palliative treatments so that they can live as happily as possible until the cancer begins to prevent them from carrying on a normal life .
The same happens in case of metastasis and it is no longer possible to do anything to stop the progression of the disease.
The palliative treatments
In each case, the veterinarian will recommend the most appropriate palliative treatments.
It is about reducing or getting rid of your pets pain or discomfort so that it can lead a life as normal as possible .
Everything depends on the type of tumor, the veterinarian will give us an expectation of life that usually does not exceed six months, but that depends a lot on each case and the type of cancer of the animal.
Always keep in mind that it is not something mathematical and that each animal evolves in a different way .
Obviously, we can not have our dog or cat in a bed, with a dropper. He does not understand this type of situation and will want to make his life comfortable and enjoyable, When you can not lead a normal and dignified life, it will be in our hands to help them cross the rainbow without unnecessary suffering .
