London: On Friday, British Transport Regulatory organization, Transport for London (TfL) announced Uber is not “fit and proper” to run their ridesharing Taxi Service in London and the license expiring 30 September 2017 will not be renewed. To fight the Tfl, Uber Petition #SaveYourUber attempts to reach 1 Million signatures to revoke Uber London ban.
What does Uber London Ban Mean
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan announced Friday that Silicon Valley tech company with 40,000 drivers and 3.5 Million subscribers is unfit to operate in the city and hence TfL won’t renew their license any further.
Uber London Ban implies that Londoners won’t be able to book a cab within the city after the ban. However, until the appeal is over, Uber can continue to operate and take bookings after which it will have to pack the bags and say goodbye to the city.
If the appeal is rejected, Uber drivers will lose their source of employment and since they are not entitled to Severance pay, many of them may fail to pay their utility bills and loan amounts. Moreover, the affordable mode of transportation for most commuters will come to a startling halt.
One of the key points for the Uber London ban as stated by Tfl says how Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is obtained by Uber is questionable. Furthermore, they have also mentioned how Uber reported serious crimes such as sexual assaults much later putting the general public at risk.
Play By the Rules, Says Sadiq Khan
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London and Chairperson of Tfl has been accused of giving in to the pressure and putting the union’s agenda ahead of common people’s convenience and choice of the commute.
“If you play by the rules you’re welcome in London if you don‘t, don’t be surprised if TfL takes action against you.”
In his defense, the Mayor has stated how he always welcomes new and innovative companies that help the Londoners and make the services more affordable. However, he stated that “it is not an excuse” to break the laws.
“As mayor of London, I welcome innovative new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service but providing an innovative service is not an excuse for not following the rules.”
Further, he added, how the Uber team has been aggressively threatening the TfL with their army of PR and lawyers.
Uber Team has called the TfL to come to an arrangement and discuss the matter clearly as some of the issues are still unclear with the Silicon Valley tech company.
Dara Khosrowshahi, the Chief Executive of Uber has apologized for the past mistakes and requests a chance to improve with the support of Londoners and 3.5 million consumers who use Uber every day.
He has asked for support by signing the petition to save 40,000 livelihoods and the consumer choice ride of 3.5 million users. While this petition won’t change the legal ruling, Uber has been known to pressurize the city and state authorities with their massive consumer base at the location.</>
