Justin Trudeau’s Immigration Crisis

Canada is a country which has had a very hard time saying no when questions arise on how to control Immigration.

By February of 2011 Canada had welcomed the highest amount of immigrants in more than 50 years, with almost 300,000 people arriving in Canada. The numbers were more than 50% higher than the annual numbers just ten years prior.

This is something that Justin Trudeau wishes not only to continue, but surpass and make a part of his “legacy”, unfortunately this could be a legacy he doesn’t want to be remembered for.

Travel Ban

In January of 2017 President Trump began to roll out his travel ban, which prevent immigrants for 8 Muslim majority countries from entering the united states, this included many who were seeking asylum from war torn countries.

That same week Trudeau took to Twitter and stated “ To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith.” He tweeted again two months later “Regardless of who you are or where you come from, there’s always a place for you in Canada”. Trudeau’s tweets have created a giant problem for Canada.

Haitian Asylum Seekers

When President Trump issued his travel ban, there were thousands and thousands of Haitian asylum seekers who were already in the United States legally.

They became fearful that their legal asylum status to stay in the United States would soon be taken away , and thanks to Trudeau’s tweets, many started to cross the border illegally into Quebec. During the summer months of 2017, an average of 250 illegal immigrants crossed the border into Quebec illegally. There were so many people entering the country that tent camps had to be set up for the refugee processing to begin. This is a trend that won’t be stopping anytime soon.

President Trump has cancelled the protected status for over 50,000 Haitians living in the United states, which becomes effective in 2019. Shortly after that was announced, the news was also given that the protected status for almost 200,000 people from Salvador living under asylum laws in the United States will no longer be allowed to remain in the country.

There is very little doubt that the majority of those refugees are now looking to Canada as their new home.

Canada can not Offer an Open Invitation

Despite what the multiple tweets by Trudeau would lead people to believe, Canada is not prepared to accept all the asylum seekers of the world. Having accepted over 25,000 Syrians right after his election, with this number growing by the day, Canadian ministers had to start explaining that Canada can not offer an open invitation to all asylum seekers.

There are rules that have to be followed and simply claiming asylum can not just grant you a free ticket to Canada.
