Trump’s son-in-law faces Kelly over new restrictions on insider information

Jared Kushner , son-in-law of President Donald Trump and one of his advisers, is reluctant to give up his access to highly classified information, which has led to an internal struggle with John Kelly , the White House chief of staff.

Kushner is among a dozen White House officials who operate under provisional security permits , according to officials who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity.

Nearly a year after the administration’s arrival, some high-level officials – including daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband – remained with provisional credentials to access such information, even when other senior advisers were given full access.

But access and privileges have been further narrowed by the case of Rob Porter , the former staff secretary who resigned under duress this month, after accusations of domestic abuse were made public .

Kelly, who threatened to resign after the scandal as not to tarnished his image as a man of order and discipline, is working to renew the process of security clearance, and one of his first steps is to revoke the provisional access permits to some high officials.

Last Friday, Kelly said in a memorandum that he would revoke the superior authorisations for anyone whose background checks are still pending from June 1st or earlier.

According to officials quoted by the Times , Kushner is pressing to regain access to classified information, including the presidential daily report or “PDB.”

Consulted on the subject, the press secretary of the White House, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, denied that about Kushner.

“I can tell you that nothing that has taken place will affect the valuable work that Jared is doing,” Sanders said. “He continues, and will continue to be, a valuable member of the team,” he added.

“I am not aware of any red flags and I think it is irresponsible to suggest (something) without having seen the file of any individual,” he added.

Sanders declined to say whether President Trump would overturn any determination from Kelly that would deny Kushner, or anyone else, a permanent authorization.
