Keystone XL pipeline : Trudeau is satisfied with Trump’s decision to give the green light to the pipeline

The Donald Trump presidency is having a great effect in Canada, especially for the country’s oil industry like the Keystone XL pipeline.

The controversial president of the United States signed a decree that gave the green light to the Keystone XL pipeline project , which was believed to have died during the former government of Barack Obama, even today many Canadian and Americans alike still know very little about it.

It is already estimated that this will have a tremendous impact in Canada and is still putting all the political groups in a complex situation regarding the furthermore of the pipeline.

During a press conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he “positively welcomes the support of his new colleague south of the border”, noting that “oil pipelines are still the safest and least polluting means of transporting oil when compared to the alternative options.

In Washington , President Trump said his decision of supporting this partnership is in line with his vision of “buying American . ” Its goal is that the United States “build its own oil pipelines, as in the past” and considers that some 28,000 jobs will be created with this project.

The Keystone XL pipeline could allow Alberta oil to reach refineries directly in to Texas and the southern United States, opening up more opportunities for Canadian crude.

However, for many opponents, this goes against Trudeu’s vision of focusing his policies on the fight against climate change.

“We have to be aware that the transition away from fossil fuels will take a long time . We have to do it responsibly and effectively, “he said.

More Negotiations on the horizon

Trump explained, during the signing of the agreement, the conditions of Keystone XL will be ” renegotiated ” so that the United States is obtaining the greatest possible benefits. Trudeau did not respond directly to this, but on the Canadian side consider that the project could be  of great benefit for the economy of the country and to sustain large job opportunity in Alberta.

The episode has also generated tensions, when Trudeau was asked by a journalist about whether he considered Trump a ” misogynist “, the Prime Minister simply sidestepped the issue and said he is interested in good relations with the new government.

The Keystone XL project represents some 1,900 kilometres of oil pipelines , of which only 500 will travel through Canadian lands and have a total value of around $8,000 million.
