Tillerson: North Korea knows what it has to do to open the dialogue

CAIRO – US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in Cairo on Monday that it is still “too early” to enter into negotiations with North Korea and said that Pyongyang “knows what to put on the table” for a rapprochement.

“It’s up to North Korea to decide when they want to deal with us honestly, meaningfully. They know what needs to be put on the table to have conversations, “Tillerson told a news conference with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shukri.

Tillerson pointed out that, before starting any negotiations with North Korea, it is necessary to hold talks “to determine if the parties are prepared to carry out something that is significant” in these hypothetical negotiations.

“We will wait and see,” said the head of US diplomacy.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in urged North Korea on Saturday to try to resume dialogue with the United States to defuse tensions during a meeting with a regime delegation led by leader Kim Jong-un’s sister. .

The historic visit of the sister of the North Korean leader to the South has staged the rapprochement between Pyongyang and Seoul, although the US continues to maintain it’s scepticism and is determined to maintaining economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea.

Tillerson started today in Egypt a tour of the Middle East, which will also take him to Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
