Plane Crashed In Iran Killing 66

TEHRAN – An air-plane crashed in south Iran killed 66 people on board, the Aseman Airlines spokesman said.

Speaking to the country’s public television, Mohammad Taghi Tabatabai said the Iranian company’s plane was carrying 60 passengers, including one child, and six crew members.

According to the same source, the plane crashed on Mount Dena, about 440 meters (1,440 feet) high.

The ATR-72, used for short-haul regional flights, crashed close to a remote and mountainous city of Semirom, about 620 km (390 miles) south of it’s capital, Tehran.

Iranian news agencies Isna and Fars, emergency services spokesman Mojtaba Khaledi said that a rescue helicopter had been sent to the Zagros mountains, explaining that “because of the mountainous terrain of the region, it is not possible to send ambulances. “

The chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian parliament, Alaedin Borujerdi, said the accident was spotted by several residents.
