Canada and its war on Healthcare and Euthanasia

A year after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took office he introduced legislation which the Canadian Supreme Court declared that all Canadians had a right to assisted suicide and euthanasia.

In order to qualify for this option the person must be medically diagnosed with a condition that causes irremediable suffering, something that is completely determined by the patient, and would have to be seen as a competent adult. The problem is that not only did this bill allow for a patient to decide if they wanted to take their own life, it also declared that it was an enforceable legal right for them to receive medical aid in dying.

What does this mean exactly?

It means that any doctor who might be opposed to euthanasia, either from a professional or personal stance, would be required by law to assist a patient in suicide if they fit the criteria placed forth by the government, or face repercussions. 

A Lack of Balance

Justin Trudeau tried to claim that this law was a balance between protecting Canadians who are vulnerable, and defending the freedoms and rights of Canadians… it would seem he doesn’t really understand how that last part works, as his bill takes away the freedoms and rights of Canadians.

This is just another thing to add to the long list of Justin Trudeau’s policies that go against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms act.

The act states that everyone in Canada has the fundamental freedom of conscience and religion.  But it would appear now that Canadians only have this fundamental freedom as long as it is considered politically correct by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party and his supports. One of those supporters is the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, although they are very quick to get involved in cases that seem to go against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms act, it would appear they only want to defend cases that agree with their liberal mindset as they called the assisted suicide and euthanasia legislation to be a promising step forward.

Loss of Rights

Before the bill was passed, the language was changed to make it slightly harder for patients to be considered for assisted suicide, but it still required doctors to make a referral to another doctor who would be willing to provide assistance if the original doctor was not. Unfortunately, nurses are not able to have those same rights. Since a nurse is not qualified to make referrals or official recommendations on treatment, they have to either do as the doctor asks and assist with the suicide, or risk being fired. The same issue exists for pharmacists who may disagree morally with the act, but would still be required by law to fill the medications that would end the patient’s life.

One Percent

As of the end of last year, 1% of all the deaths in Canada are now caused by doctor assisted suicide, and the number is growing. The second half of 2017 saw 47% more doctor assisted deaths than just six months prior. This combined with the new anti-abortion law in the Canadian Summer Jobs Program shows that not only does the Liberal Canadian government have a disrespect for basic human life, but they also have disrespect for the religious freedom of Canadian citizens.
