Los Diablos: What Caused The Rapid Wildfire?

The wildfire that started on Sunday for reasons unknown spread across 73,000 acres in separate locations across Northern California’s Wine Country including Sonoma, Napa, and six other counties.

Thousands of firefighters battled with winds gusting at 70mph since erupting on Sunday night, said Daniel Berlant, CalFire Spokesperson.

California Wine Country people are fighting through a natural phenomenon called Santa Ana Winds. These are powerful winds that start inland and blasts hot and dry air across Northern California regions.

Also known as Los Diablos or “devil winds”, the primary cause of wildfire spread in 8 counties are the dry weather in the state and the winds gusting at a 50 mph in seven counties.

“It was a simultaneous eruption of large fires that were all wind driven, with winds up to 50 miles per hour, in seven counties.”, Bret Gouvea, CalFire Deputy Chief.

Current Situation in Wine Country

The region is threatened by fire which accounts for more than 12 percent of wine production. Aside from the potential hazards to vineyards from fire, they also have a sustained threat from the fire smoke that may taint unharvested grapes.

An estimate of 780,000 acres has been destroyed this year as a result of 7,700n wildfires in California.

Governor Jerry Brown has declared an emergency in 8 counties across California.

“These fires have destroyed structures and continue to threaten thousands of homes, necessitating the evacuation of thousands of residents. These fires have damaged and continue to threaten critical infrastructure and have forced the closure of major highways and local roads.” – Gov. Jerry Brown</>
