The father of a 3-year-old girl missing in Texas was being held on Tuesday on aggravated child abuse, a crime punishable with life imprisonment.
“The judge set him a $ 1 million bond”, said Richardson Police Sgt. Kevin Perlich.
Wesley Mathews, 37, was detained Monday night after volunteering to testify, but this time he changed the story he gave to investigators about the disappearance of his adopted daughter Sherin Mathews.
Police Sargent did not clarify how Mathews’ new responses differed from his initial statements about the girl’s disappearance.
Meanwhile, police are awaiting confirmation that a body which was found this weekend is the actual girl’s body, although Police said there was no reason not to believe it was not.
The coroner’s office is also expected to disclose the cause of death and make positive Id.
The disappearance of this 3 year old little girl, who happens to be adopted from India a year ago, was reported missing by her Dad on the 7th of October.
The Father told the police that his daughter had been told by him to stand by a tree in front of the house at around 3 o’clock in the early morning as a punishment for not drinking her milk, and when he went back to look for her around 15 minutes later , she wasn’t their anymore.
Authorities said “it took five hours to report the disappearance”.
Mathews had been released on bail now, after being charged with child neglect.
According to police, the father said that “the child was physically retarded and malnourished” when he and his wife adopted her and that they were to be given a special diet that included feeding her every time she was awake, even at night, to gain weight.
Mathews initially told police that after an initial search, he entered the house and washed his clothes while he waited for her return.
