Google Launches Google Pixel 2 XL: Is It Worth The Hype at $849?

San Francisco: Google has ditched its flagship phone display at 16:9 ratio and entered the market with taller and larger screen space phones with its new range of Pixel called Google Pixel 2XL which stands tall with 18:9 aspect ratio.

What you’ll get basically is a unique two-toned finish look on the phone which looks rather ubiquitous and minimal bezels at the back panel. If you loved the glass finish on the predecessor Pixel phone, you’ll love the new improved design. While retaining the glass panel around the camera the rest of the body is made of aluminum.

You’ll love the hands-on feel of the phone which despite the large size is very comfortable to hold. The Pixel 2 XL also gets dust and water resistance rated with IP67 certification which is another plus in this variant model from Google.

Camera Optimized For Augmented Reality: The Fun Begins Now

Like Apple has optimized its new iphone X camera for AR, Google is not left behind with an optimized camera for AR Apps. Google has a hands-down advantage with Machine Learning as well which it has brought to all basic and new features in the Pixel 2 XL.

The camera features 12MP with Optical Image Stabilization and Electronic image stabilization which will ensure you get the best photographs even while moving. It also features a new technique called Dual-Pixel Autofocus that enhances the improved depth analysis of a photograph for a quality portrait mode.

Next, Google will deploy Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms where your premium phone will understand the contents of the taken picture and identify faces. The HDR+ has been tweaked in the mix as well.

Pixel 2 XL: What’s Under the Hood

In the phone Hardware market, Google has less than 1 percent share with Samsung holding the big reigns at 21 percent and Apple at 14% to date.

Pixel 2 XL looks a promising phone that will up the scales for Google in the hardware zone featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB RAM. The phone will run on Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box. So, you won’t have to wait for an upgrade to get your hands-on the most ultimate OS from Android so far.

The phone also offers improved gaming experience with additional and faster graphics in the hardware.

The battery is also improved with 3,520 mAH and an option of 64GB or 128GB variant as well.

Google Skips the Headphone Jack; Welcome Pixel Buds

While criticizing Apple for the same, Google has moved on the similar road this year with skipping the 3.5 mm headphone jacks and introducing Pixel Buds at $159 which were introduced in the event along with the new Pixel models.

A demonstration of the Pixel buds showed a lady speaking in Swedish while wearing Google Pixel Buds and talking to a man holding a Pixel phone – and speaking English.

Yes, Pixel Buds support Live language translation understanding over 92 languages and comes with an out-of-the-box support for Google Assistant.

An interesting feature called Active Edge has also been introduced which I’ll discuss in detail in the next section.

Active Edge: Squeeze Your Pixel Buds and Perform Quick Commands

Replicating the Edge Sense from HTC, Google has taken it one step further with Active Edge feature. It simply means that you can squeeze the phone and your pixel buds to perform quick actions like a soft squeeze to launch the assistant, take pictures and do a lot more with customizable operations.

Google Pixel 2XL: Our Verdict

From the early impressions of Google Pixel 2 XL, I can easily say that Google has improved and done many things just right. From the previous Pixel’s design change to a larger screen and optimized optics, the new premium phone looks promising.

Although we can’t compare it with Apple just yet, the Phone definitely takes an edge over iPhone X with its Machine Learning and Artificial Language capabilities from Google. The only testing in the market would be its competent price with a price tag of $849.
