T-Mobile Puts a 5GB Cap on Mobile Without Borders Plan for One Plus Users

T-Mobile has put a 5GB cap on its Mobile Without Borders Plan started in 2015 for its One plus users traveling to Canada and Mexico. Starting on 12 November, the LTE speed will drop to 256Kbps for Oneplus users and 128Kbps for other users after the daily limit has been reached.

What Mobile Without Borders Plan Meant For Travelers?

In 2015, T-Mobile launched its Mobile Without Borders plan which made it a more appealing choice for travelers and businessmen traveling to Canada or Mexico frequently. Under this plan, making calls or using your phone for watching videos or spending away time with some Internet usage was virtually free. It was almost like traveling out of state and not abroad.

Go from New York to Canada, or from California to Mexico; it’s just like going from Idaho to Texas, from Georgia to Kentucky.

– John Legere, CEO of T-Mobile in 2015.

T-Mobile offered Mobile Without Borders Un-carrier plan which introduced free calling texting and LTE plans for travelers in Mexico, Canada, and US. This plan was offered only for US citizens with a One or One Plus Mobile.

What Will Be the Impact of The T-Mobile Plan for One and One Plus Users?

Starting November 12, 2017, customers on T-Mobile ONE, Simple Choice North America, or legacy rate plans with a qualifying feature will receive unlimited talk, text, and data with a maximum of 5GB of 4G LTE. After 5GB of high-speed data is used in Mexico and Canada (or your high-speed data allotment is reached, whichever comes first), customers will stay connected with unlimited data at Simple Global speeds (up to 128kbps for most plans or 256kbps with T-Mobile ONE Plus).

– T-Mobile

In order to prevent usage beyond the intent of the product, T-Mobile has unveiled this new plan which will affect T-Mobile ONE, SImple Choice and Legacy plan users. After T-Mobile introduced unlimited Netflix streaming earlier this week, this plan comes as a slap to travelers who spend their time watching youtube videos or business owners relying on unlimited LTE data plans.

Only 1% Users Affected With This Plan – T-Mobile

Mobile Without Borders is an incredible benefit and allows customers to stay connected when traveling in Canada and Mexico. In order to prevent usage beyond the intent of the product, we implemented a limit on the amount of monthly 4G LTE data. Less than 1% of people with this benefit travel to Mexico and Canada use over 5GB a month. After 5GB of high-speed data is used in Mexico and Canada (or your high-speed data allotment is reached, whichever comes first), customers will stay connected with unlimited data at Simple Global speeds (up to 128kbps for most plans or 256kbps with T-Mobile ONE Plus).

T-Mobile has made this change which will only affect one percent of the people traveling to Mexico and Canada. After the users have exceeded 80% of the 5GB limit, they will be sent an alert message from T-Mobile. You can also check your LTE data usage with a shortcode #WEB# from your mobile.

If you have any more queries on the change and how it will reflect on your mobile usage, you can check the dedicated T-Mobile FAQ page to get all the answers.
