In an interview published today by the official agency RIA Nóvosti, Lavrov says that “the main one (of the problems in relations with the US) is the Russo-phobic hysteria that has taken over the political class in Washington and that already has, without exaggeration, a character of paranoia. “
He explains that this “Russo-phobic hysteria” is precisely what does not allow progress in important areas for both countries and “provokes additional tension in the world arena.”
Sergey Lavrov denounces that Russian diplomats are being pressured in the US and that a “persecution campaign” has been unleashed against Russian media, in particular against the RT television network, which was declared a “foreign agent” by US authorities.
However, the Russian chancellor believes that the term “iron curtain” can not be applied to the state of Russian-American relations at the current stage.
“Rather, one can speak of a new attack of McCarthyism, to which, apparently, the American society was not fully immunized,” he adds.
At the same time, Sergey Lavrov expresses his conviction that, “in the past Joseph McArthy” was on a witch hunt himself that proved nothing, in this current situation only wisdom will prevail. “Although much time and effort will have been lost uselessly,” says the head of Russian diplomacy.
