The “gift” of Donald Trump’s Christmas to Undocumented Immigrants

Millions of undocumented immigrants will be harmed by the latest Trump government law.

This is undoubtedly the worst Christmas in recent history for millions of immigrants and thousands of undocumented immigrants in the United States thanks to President Donald Trump .

His last gift, one of the darkest, refers to the tax reform that he has just signed into law.

“The American families will see doubled tax credit for child up to $2,000 for each child under 17 years”. This was announced by the White House after the approval of the fiscal reform on Wednesday, but it ignored the large group of undocumented families in the United States who will not have access to this vital tax aid.

A provision of the tax reform signed by Donald Trump  requires that anyone who claims the Tax Credit (CTC) and the Additional Tax Credit for Child (ACTC) at the time of filing their taxes, must have a valid number of Social Security for each of the children .

This measure is designed to prevent thousands of undocumented immigrants from receiving these benefits every year.

These tax credits are called “reimbursable” because people who do not earn enough to pay taxes can still get these reimbursements, such as with the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), which with the new Trump tax reform delivers up to $2,000 dollars for each child.

Until prior to the signing of Trump’s tax law, all that was required to claim these tax refunds was to meet income limits and file a tax return using a Personal Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and it did not matter whether the beneficiary children had a social security number or not.

The ITIN was created in 1996 for foreigners who had to deal with the IRS and since then it has allowed people who are in the country to illegally declare taxes , as well as enjoy the benefits and tax credits provided by the government.
