President Donald Trump questioned on Saturday the impartiality of the FBI deputy director, Andrew McCabe, who plans to retire from the agency in the coming months.
The president wrote in a tweet: “How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the one in charge (in the agency), along with James Comey, of the False Hillary Clinton investigation (including the 33,000 illegally erased e-mails) receive $ 700,000 for his wife’s campaign on behalf of Clinton’s puppets during the investigation? “
This week, McCabe spent hours behind closed doors being questioned by legislators from two different committees in the Capitol, part of a new investigation to the FBI, and the investigation of this agency in 2016 to the way Clinton used her email when she was Secretary of State. McCabe’s role as supervisor of the mail inquiry is under renewed scrutiny.
McCabe’s wife, Jill, received $700,000 in donations from the fundraising committee of Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Democratic Party there for a campaign seat to the state Senate in 2015.
The money was donated before McCabe was promoted to deputy director of the FBI and assumed a supervisory position in the Clinton e-mail inquiry.
McAuliffe is a longtime supporter of Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
McCabe became interim director of the FBI in May after Trump fired Comey, who oversaw the agency’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
The president maintains that there was no collusion between his campaign team and the president.
Russian government considers the investigation a “witch hunt“.
From his mansion in South Florida, Trump also tweeted that MCabe “only counts the time he needs to retire with all the benefits. 90 days left? !!! “
McCabe plans to retire in about 90 days and will be able to access all pension benefits, the Washington Post reported on Saturday, citing sources close to that information.
Trump and his Republican allies have clearly specified that they want to see him out of the FBI, but he is a civil service employee who can not be fired unless there is clear evidence that he committed something illegal.
