North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, has announced the suspension of nuclear and missile tests in his country, as well as the closure of nuclear testing facility, according to the North Korean agency KCNA.
“As of April 21st, North Korea will stop nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile launches,” Yonhap reported, quoting the North Korean news agency KCNA.
“The North will close nuclear testing facilities in the north of the country to demonstrate its promise to suspend nuclear tests, ” the same source added.
The North Korean leader has assured in a statement that his country no longer needs to perform nuclear tests or intercontinental ballistic missiles, since it has completed the process of obtaining nuclear weapons.
On April 27th, a meeting will be held between the South Korean president, Moon Jae In, and Kim Jong-un, with the main objective of setting a suitable scenario to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, something with what Kim promised in March during his meeting in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The White House said, at the end of March that the situation in North Korea “is moving in the right direction” after the meeting between Kim and Xi. North Korean leader and US President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet in late May or early June , although there is no date for the summit at this time.
Trump himself confirmed on Wednesday that the CIA director, Mike Pompeo, met last week in Pyongyang with the leader of North Korea. “The meeting was very good and a good relationship was formed,” he said.
