South Korea and North Korea Take Steps to End War Permanently

This promise is part of the actions that the two Korea’s take to end war permanently.

“South Korea and North Korea confirm the common goal of obtaining, through total denuclearization, a non-nuclear Korean peninsula,” they said in a joint statement.

North Korea made rapid progress on the nuclear and ballistic program under Kim, who inherited power after his father’s death in 2011.

In 2017, Pyongyang carried out its most powerful nuclear test to date and tested intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) that leave the continental United States within its reach.

The summit on Friday was full of symbols: when the two leaders greeted each other with a handshake and ended with a hug.

“There will be no more war on the Korean peninsula,” they said in a joint statement after the summit, the first in more than a decade and 65 years after the war ended with an armistice, instead of a peace treaty.

The two Korea’s will try this year to end the war permanently – according to the text – to meet with the United States and perhaps also with China (both signatories of the ceasefire) “with a goal of declaring the end of the war, and establish a permanent and solid regime of peace “.

Some of the promises made in the past remained dormant in a letter. This time the North Korean leader has committed – he says – to do everything he can to carry out the commitments reached with the South Korean president, who will visit Pyongyang in the fall.

The two Koreas will coordinate closely to make sure they do not “repeat the unfortunate past that saw the previous inter-Korean agreements go nowhere,” he said. “There could be backlash, difficulties and frustrations on the way,” Kim warned. “But you can not achieve victory without pain,” he said.

Another topic discussed was the meeting of families separated by the war.

The two countries “decided to continue with the program of reuniting families separated on the occasion of the National Liberation Day on August 15th of this year,” when they celebrate the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II, the text reports.

Trump salutes “historic” encounter between Kim and Moon

US President Donald Trump greeted the summit between leaders of North and South Korea on Friday, though he said “time will tell” if the results were good.

“After a furious year with missile launches and nuclear tests, a historic meeting between North and South Korea is taking place,” Trump tweeted, after the respective leaders Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in agreement to seek a peace treaty, permanent and complete denuclearization of the peninsula.

“Good things are happening, but only time will tell,” added Trump, who is scheduled to meet with Kim Jong Un on a date to be yet set.

In another tweet, Trump wrote: “END OF THE WAR OF KOREA! The United States, and all its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is happening today in Korea.
