A former high school basketball star within Southern Florida was gunned down on Sunday, police are searching intensely for the gunman.
Malcolm Nicholas III, aged 19, was shot on November 12 after 7:00 p.m. around 5th Avenue NW and 17th Street, in Over-town.
“Fire department transported him to the Jackson Memorial Trauma Center where medical staff declared him dead,” said Miami City Police Officer Christopher Bess.
CBS 4 News reported that Nicholas played basketball at Miami Senior High and also attended Mater Academy.
His former coach, who had known him since he was six years old, says that Malcolm went to a school outside the city and that he was visiting his grandmother when he was shot.
Javorie Wilson said that “Nicholas had a promising future”.
“He was a very capable young man, we could see that at an early age, he was really good at coming to the summer camps,” Wilson recalled.
Condolences spilled into social networks as people learned of the shooting.
A tweet read: “A VERY SAD DAY FOR BASKETBALL OF MIAMI DADE! THE LOSS OF MALCOLM NICOLAS JR IS DIFFICULT TO ACCEPT … PRAYERS TO FAMILIES. @wickchris WE LOVE YOU SON!”
Another said: “Even today we raise our hands against our brother … We have perfected our weapons, our conscience has fallen asleep and we have sharpened our ideas to justify us as if it were normal we continue to sow destruction, pain, death.” Violence and war they only lead to death. “
The City of Miami Police is asking the public’s help to catch the person in charge.
“If someone was in the area during the incident, we encouraged them to contact our Police Department or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers.”
