The next big thing is already here, and it goes by the name of Augmented Reality (AR).

No matter who you are, the technology that superimposes digital images into a user’s vision of the real world, is going to change the way you work, play, shop, and navigate your life.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, says AR is more important to the world than is Virtual Reality. “I’m excited about Augmented Reality because unlike Virtual Reality, which closes the world out,” said Cook. “AR allows individuals to be present in the world but hopefully allows an improvement on what’s happening presently.

“Most people don’t want to lock themselves out from the world for a long period of time and today you can’t do that because you get sick from it. With AR you can, not be engrossed in something, but have it be a part of your world, of your conversation. That has resonance.”

Mark Cuban, likewise thrilled about AR and the development of new AR apps, gleefully says, “As a diversified technology investor, I have a ringside seat to watch how AR/VR is set to change the world,” .

Cook is not just blowing smoke. He is putting Apple’s money where his mouth is. Apple’s ARKit helps developers build AR apps for iOS mobile devices to give users incredibly detailed AR experiences. And, just a few weeks ago, Apple invested even more in this new technology when it purchased Vrvana, an AR headset startup, for around $30 million.    

The rate of AR adoption will depend upon how quickly quality AR apps can be created and how quickly the democratizing of the technology happens. Builders of AR apps need to keep in the forefront of their minds that the easier and more natural AR becomes, the more readily folks will be to use it.

The developing of AR apps is a rich niche that is just beginning to launch. Think about it: Apple would not have released the ARKit or bought Vrvana if it did not want makers of AR apps to create awesome AR apps for iOS mobile devices. BMW has gotten the jump on its competitors via the Apple ARKit with the release of the BMW i Visualizer AR app that lets customers view and explore full-sized BMWs anywhere on the planet. As of now, this is my favorite of all of the car AR apps

 Furniture, Appliances, and Anything Else You’d Like to Purchase for Your Home

Just as BMW’s AR app allows would-be buyers to check out cars on the roads around their homes, AR apps such as Amikasa let people see how a new sofa looks in their living room or a new refrigerator fits in the kitchen.

Gaming

Gaming introduced AR to the world when Sony unleashed Pokémon Go on the world to such fanfare that the Pokémon Company’s profits skyrocketed by 2,500 percent. Yikes!

Staying with AR apps for gaming, there are also AR apps that turn the real world into AR Laser Tag battlefields. The AR gaming surface is just beginning to be scratched.

When it comes to travel and learning, the AR possibilities are endless. Currently, the greatest of the travel and education AR apps is the Wikitude World Browser AR app. This fantastic AR app sources info from more than 3,000 content providers to turn the entire world into a guided tour.
