“Save the Children” Office in Afghanistan Attacked killing 2

KABUL (Conspiracy Talk News) – Two people were killed Wednesday when gunmen attacked the headquarters of a nongovernmental organisation “Save the Children” in Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.

Gunmen attacked Save the Children’s provincial office in Jalalabad, said Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the region’s governor.

A police officer and a civilian were killed in the assault, Khogyani explained.

One insurgent blew himself up, a second assailant was killed by the authorities and a third continues to fight, he added.

At least 14 more were injured and taken to a hospital, said Inamullah Miakhial, spokesman for the Nangarhar regional hospital.

“The death toll could rise as there is a shooting still going on”, he added.

The attack began with a suicide attack followed by a shootout, Khogyani said.

The extremist Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a report published by its news agency, Aamaq. According to the information, a suicide bomber started the attack with a vehicle loaded with explosives and then a raid was carried out against “British and Swedish foundations and Afghan government institutes”.

Both the Taliban and the radical militia have an active presence in the province.

Monica Zanarelli, head of the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Afghanistan, denounced that an attack against an NGO that helps children is “intolerable”.

“Civilians and aid workers should not be attacked,” he said in a statement. “The increase in violence has made it difficult for many organizations to operate in Afghanistan.”

The incident follows a lethal siege to the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital, Kabul, over the weekend, in which 22 people died, 14 of them foreigners. Several Americans were killed or injured in the Taliban attack on the building, which lasted 13 hours, the US State Department said Tuesday. Washington did not offer exact figures immediately about his dead or injured.

Eleven of the 14 foreigners had previously been identified as workers of the private Afghan airline KamAir. During a ceremony held on Wednesday at the Kabul airport, the bodies of seven Ukrainian citizens were handed over to the country’s authorities for repatriation.

On the other hand, in the eastern Ghazni province, four Afghan policemen died after an insurgent attack on their checkpoint, said Arif Noori, a spokesman for the local government.

Six extremists were killed and three others were injured in the fighting, which occurred early on Wednesday in the Dayak district, Noori said.
