SALT (Conspiracy Talk News) – It is well known that too much salt increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. But what does it do to the brain?
A study carried out by scientists from the Weill Cornell Medicine School in New York City (USA) concludes that too much salt in our diet can cause cognitive deficit. Fortunately, these negative effects can be reversed and the work, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows us how.
The authors suggested that a possible mechanism behind these negative effects involves the so-called endothelial cells within the cerebral blood vessels .
Endothelial cells are found in blood vessels and are responsible for regulating vascular tone; however, a high intake has been associated with the dysfunction of these cells.
Although it is known that epithelial dysfunction can bring a plethora of chronic diseases, it is not yet clear how salt-induced endothelial dysfunction can affect the brain in the long term.
It is not a trivial matter, because the brain depends to a great extent on the existence of a stable flow of oxygen to function properly.
Not everything is lost
The good news is that the negative effects of the high-salt diet seem to be reversible.
The mice returned to a normal diet after 12 weeks, and the results were encouraging.
“The deleterious effects were eliminated by the return of mice to a normal diet, which points to the reversibility of vascular dysfunction and cognitive impairment,” the experts write.
The findings suggest that changes in lifestyle , or a new class of drugs, may help offset the negative effects of a diet rich in salt.
